All children are born unconditionally loving. They have a natural desire to reach out to those in need and to shower all living things with kindness and love. They remind us to be fully present in each moment. They inspire us to be joyful, imaginative, and playful and to bounce back quickly from disappointment. They are beings of pure light.

At this time in our human evolution, many of the children being born bring with them a special aptitude for healing. Many seem wise beyond their years and have a heightened awareness of spiritual things. They show a unique level of compassion for others and the planet. Many speak to their caregivers at a very young age of seeing angels and other spiritual beings, of seeing auras, of being able to communicate with flora and fauna and with their caregivers and siblings telepathically, and of a very close and personal connection to God.

These children are sometimes referred to as "star children" or "the new children". More specifically they are known as "Indigo", "Crystal" and "Rainbow" children.

We are living in a time when the planet is about to undergo an energetic shift. Lower vibrations are being transformed into higher frequencies as we prepare to experience a sort of "global awakening". These children are the enlightened inhabitants of this new age.

Often misunderstood, these gifted beings are many times diagnosed with ADD and ADHD or autism. Teachers and psychologists may label them as excessively sensitive. Some of them are "late talkers". This is because they have no need to speak audibly with those who care for them. Being put on medication robs them of their spiritual sensitivity. It is important that as caregivers, parents and teachers, we learn to see these children as beings of light that operate at a higher level than we do and because of such they are easily bored and frustrated with our slower, more mundane systems. Many come fully aware of their birthright as the inheritors of the earth and have little tolerance of our rules and norms because in the new age there will be little need of such ways. While we do need to guide them and set boundaries (especially for Indigos) we also need to give them outlets for their special abilities. We need to support their sensitivity rather than toughen them up. We need to support their psychic gifts rather than dismiss them as imaginings or nonsense. They need to spend lots of time in nature. They need art and music - two things that are quickly disappearing from our public school systems. They need quality sleep. They need quality nutrition - yes we survived on what our parents did, but these "new children" are highly sensitive to what they eat and the environment they live in. We need to feed them as organically as possible and replace as many things as we can in our cupboards and refrigerators with whole grain versions and foods that are free of dyes, added sugar, preservatives and hormones.

Reiki is a wonderful outlet for children. It is a tool they can use to express the healing gifts that they already have. They can use it to reach out and help those in need. They can use it to send healing to animals and the planet. They can use it to send love and support to classmates, friends and family. Most important, it is something they can use to calm themselves when needed and to comfort themselves whenever they feel sad, afraid, angry, frustrated or ill. Reiki is a spiritual art and therefore is in tune with affirming these special childrens' spiritual and psychic gifts.

Every child that learns Reiki should have a close caregiver in their life who practices Reiki as well. Someone else who understands this gift and can inspire and support them as they grow with this ability. As a caregiver or parent of a Indigo, Crystal or Rainbow child or any child who has been diagnosed with "special needs", learning Reiki yourself is very beneficial. Reiki is very calming to a child who is angry or upset or unable to sleep. It can soothe away nightmares and anxiety. You can "reiki" their food before you serve it. You can "reiki" medication to increase its benefits and reduce its side effects. You can use it to send them peace and love when you are apart. You can send it to their teachers or counselors or therapists with the intention of it opening them to understanding and new insights on working with your child. Also you can "reiki" yourself for emotional, mental, physical and spiritual support and strength.

Below are lists of the most common characteristics of Indigo, Crystal and Rainbow children. Please note that your Indigo, Crystal or Rainbow may not demonstrate all of these characteristics. Also your child's birthdate may place them out of range of a certain list of personality traits. Children born ahead of a given range are known as "scouts" and have come with the special job of scouting out the planet for those that follow. Children are also sometimes born after a given range, such as Indigos, for other specific tasks.
